Poland declares squad for Euro 2008 qualifiers against Portugal, Finland

Poland coach Leo Beenhakker is sticking with the players that upset Portugal last year for his team's rematch with the World Cup semifinalists in European Championship qualifying. Celtic goalkeeper Artur Boruc, who has taken over since Kowalewski's injuries and sparse playing time at Spartak Moscow, looks likely to start in goal. Gibson hopes to be included in Republic of Ireland squad

Manchester United youngster Daron Gibson impressed after coming on as a half-time sub to earn his first cap in Wednesday's 4-0 friendly win over Denmark. He was not included in the Republic's Under-21 squad for the European qualifier against Portugal. That suggests he is in Steve Staunton's plans for next month's two games. Gibson is at the centre of a dispute between the Republic and Northern Ireland over his eligibility. Nigel Worthington has been making attempts to persuade Gibson to switch his allegiance back to Northern Ireland and Staunton will hope that his awarding Gibson a first senior cap ends the controversy. He played for Northern Ireland at under-16 level before switching to the Republic.

On Wednesday night, Gibson made an immediate impact by playing a major part in the Republic's third goal on 54 minutes with Jesper Christiansen unable to hold the substitute's long-range shot and Shane Long reacting to fire home the rebound. But the Celtic player is now pressing for a place in next month's Euro 2008 qualifiers against Slovakia and the Czech Republic.

Poland Vs Russia friendly match ended in draw at 2:2

In a friendly match, before crucial qualifiers in the Euro 2008 elimination round in September, Poland drew with Russia 2:2 in Moscow at the Lokomotiw stadium. In the first half Poland played poorly and were losing 0:2 at the break but in the second they managed to put enough pressure on their rivals to set the final score at 2:2. However, it was not the draw in Moscow that was most important news to Polish football fans on Wednesday. Portugal only managed to drew with minnows Armenia 1:1, and the Serbs were defeated by Belgians 2:3. Only Finland, who will be Poland’s next opponent on 12 September, managed to beat Kazakhstan 2:1.

Sergei Ignashevich ruled out of Russian national team

Russia’s key defender Sergei Ignashevich was expelled from Russian national team by coach Guus Hiddink on Monday after turning up late for the team's training just two days before Russia host in-form Poland in a friendly. Hiddink said that the fullback simply ignored his advice to leave home earlier and arrived for the training late. He also added that he always try to understand a player's needs and there are exceptions to the rule when you're stuck in traffic or there's an accident. Apart from an occasional swipe from jealous Russian coaches, it has been relatively smooth sailing for Dutchman Hiddink, who has won approval from the country's fans as well as the media since taking charge of underperforming Russia just over a year ago. While Hiddink tried to play down the Ignashevich incident, it remains uncertain if the player would get a quick recall.

Portugal, Serbia hopes to qualify for Euro Cup 2008

Hamburg - Portugal, Serbia and Finland are among teams looking to improve their chances of qualifying for the 2008 European Championships with victories on Wednesday. The six qualifying matches on August 22 are between

Of six qualifying matches, three matches are in Group A where Portugal take on Armenia, Serbia have a tricky encounter at Belgium while Finland are at home to Kazakhstan. All three are on 14 points in the group, five behind leaders Poland. With Portugal and Serbia having two games in hand over Poland and one over Finland the qualifiers to be played on August 22nd appears to have become a four-team battle for the two qualifying places in the eight-team group and the matches comes with only three months remaining before the 14 qualifiers are determined to join hosts Austria and Switzerland in next summer's tournament. The qualifying picture will become clearer when all the teams again enter the combat in the next rounds of qualifying matches on September 8 and 12. In the only match in Group F, Northern Ireland could overtake Spain to go second behind Sweden with a home win over Liechtenstein. In Group D, Cyprus play against San Marino who have lost all six of their matches and conceded 36 goals, while in Group E Estonia - without a point or a goal in seven games - take on Andorra, who are bottom without a point and an even worse goal difference.

Ballack uncertain for England friendly at Wembley

German coach Joachim Loew informed that his captain Michael Ballack is an uncertainty for Germany's friendly against England at the new Wembley on 22 August. Ballack, 30, known for being a versatile and well-conditioned player, equally comfortable in attack and defense, has been out of action since picking up an ankle injury in April while playing for Chelsea FC. The Chelsea midfielder has been sidelined since early May on account of this injury and has required surgery twice. "As for Michael Ballack, there is a lot of doubt whether he'll be ready, which is a huge pity for such a big game, but we have other options in the midfield," said Loew.

The Aug 22 friendly against England serves as a test for both teams ahead of a busy autumn schedule. Germany faces key qualifying games in their bid to reach UEFA Euro 2008 in Austria and Switzerland when they travel to face Wales and Republic of Ireland in September and October. Germany will also miss midfielder Torsten Frings and striker Lukas Podolski, who are also injured, at Wembley.

France coach Raymond Domenech warned by UEFA

France coach Raymond Domenech has been warned by UEFA over his allegations of match-fixing against Italy. Michel Platini, the UEFA president, demanded that he would have to face punishment from the governing body if unable to provide evidence of his allegations made against Italy. Domenech in an interview with a French daily Le Parisien had explicitly alleged Italy of fixing match during an Under-21 qualifier for the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney. He also added that there were hidden agreements in Italian football and that he was highly concerned about refereeing in the forthcoming France vs. Italy match to be held next month. Il Corriere della Sera, a popular Italian newspaper, responded to his allegations stating that Domenech has ignited this fire with the intension of raising the tension to the advantage of his team.

Platini stated that they will be sending a letter to the French federation requesting Domenech to make available the proof of his accusation and if incapable to provide with the proof he will be penalized for his unsporting behavior. French football federation president Jean-Pierre Escalettes on the other hand claimed that Domenech’s comments did not reflect the opinions of the French football federation (FFF). France will travel to Italy for their second encounter with the 'Azzurri' in the Euro 2008 qualification stage on September 8, having won the first match 3-1 on home soil last year. France currently leads Group B of the qualification round, two points ahead of Italy in second place, with Scotland a further point adrift in third.

Rooney can get England through: Steve McClaren

England coach Steve McClaren believes firmly that Wayne Rooney can help his team in making into the Euro 2008 finals. The England coach is so much relieved with the current form of his young forward. The Manchester United player has effectively enjoyed a full pre-session and is the easiest choice for McClaren. The England coach previously spoke with Alex Forguson about the fitness of Wayne, one of the most exciting prospects of the modern game. He is also overwhelmed by the Rooney’s performance in last two games against Inter Milan and Chelsea.

“It is great to see Wayne coming back from his break this summer in top form,” Said McClaren. “Speaking to Wayne, I know he is dying to get back into the England squad and he is going to be a big player for us.” Rooney’s return after the suspension will undoubtedly lift the team’s confidence in the game against Germany on 22nd August. They need to win the next two qualifiers against Israel and Russia to stay alive in the Euro 2008 competition. Steve McClaren is pretty optimist about their future in the tournament. “It is about sticking to the preparation that we know and making sure we get the results. You are going to get bad times and adversity.” "But going through it, you learn a lot, not just about yourself but the players around you". “There is a great determination amongst the players and staff to make sure we create a successful England team that qualifies for Euro 2008. The fans deserve it.” He added.

Beckham not to join England squad soon

David Beckham ruled out his chances of playing for England in the friendly match against Germany on 22nd Aug. The 32 year old midfielder is also likely not to play in the next two Euro 2008 qualifiers against Israel and Russia on 8th and 12th September.

The declaration came after the LA Galaxy game against Toronto FC on Sunday, which the former English captain watched from sidelines. The former Real Madrid star is improving from his left knee injury and started training after an interval. Presently, he cannot plant or turn without pain.

“All that's on my mind at the moment is getting myself fit.” said Beckham.

“If I'm fit, obviously I have to play a few games before I even think about going home to England to play for the country.” Beckham concluded that “But my main priority at the moment is getting myself fit and getting myself playing for the Galaxy.”

Beckham still needs 7 to 10 days of time to fully recover from injury. He is now expected to play against DC United next Thursday, although the player is not quite sure about the possibility.

Andreas Isaksson uncertain for Group F qualifier against Denmark

Sweden goalkeeper Andreas Isaksson is at risk of making it to Sweden's Euro 2008 Group F qualifier against Denmark in September after breaking a thumb. Hiddink desires to coach Russia beyond 2008

In an interview, Russia coach Guus Hiddink mentioned that he would like to continue as the coach of the national team beyond 2008, after the current contract ends. The response came at a time when rumors were spread about his position if the team failed to qualify for Euro 2008. "If you ask me a hypothetical question because I haven't been offered a new contract yet, then yes, I would love to stay and finish my work here". "Regardless if we qualify or not." Hiddink said.

According to the Dutchman the ‘work’ not only comprise coaching the national team, but also more time-consuming processes like rebuilding of infrastructure, modernization of stadiums and training centers, and developing new players and coaches. He wants to place
Russia in that Elite position, which Soviet Union filled before its break up. “We have a very young team that has a lot of potential, but we must continue to push forward. If we do that, then the future looks bright.” said Hiddink. Hiddink, who effectively lead Netherlands and South Korea to the World Cup semi finals, also acknowledge that he was approached by many clubs and nations. But ruled out the rumor of becoming the new Chelsea manager, by declaring that they have not approached him yet.

Ledly King to miss England's next two qualifiers

England midfielder and Tottenham Hotspur club captain, Ledley King is set to miss England's Euro 2008 qualifiers in September against Israel and Russia after failing to make an immediate recovery from knee surgery. He went under the knife in mid-June to repair a damaged meniscus in his left knee and he had hoped that he would be fit to resume playing again within six to eight weeks. But according to reports last Friday, King could take up to 12 weeks to regain full fitness, missing England’s next two euro qualifiers. Croatia leads Group E with 17 points and England in fourth place with 14 points.
