Nuno Gomes out of EURO 2008 qualifier - a blow for Portugal

Nuno Gomes, SL Benfica forward is out for the rest of the season after deciding to undergo surgery on a troublesome groin injury, ruling him out of Portugal's UEFA Euro 2008 qualifier against Belgium next month. The former Fiorentina ACF striker has been plagued by a persistent problem this term and, despite featuring in 24 Portuguese League games as well as 14 European club matches for Benfica, has decided to undergo surgery. The news comes as a blow to Benfica, for whom captain Simão Sabrosa also underwent surgery recently, but also Portugal, who will now have to face Belgium on 2 June without the experienced 30-year-old, who has scored three goals in their Group A campaign so far. Poland leads Group A with 16 points from seven matches ahead of Portugal, Serbia and Finland having 11 points from six games.
