Ballack out of Germany's Squad for Euro 2008 qualifier

Michael Ballack, Germany’s captain will miss next week's Euro 2008 qualifiers on June 2nd and June 6th after failing to recover from an ankle injury. Ballack, who has won 77 caps for his country, was injured playing for Chelsea in a Premier League game against Newcastle United on April 22. He had undergone an operation last month, but it did not go down well and after several weeks of treatment Ballack told national coach Joachim Loew that he was withdrawing from the squad. Germany are top of Group D with a game in hand over the second-placed Czech Republic and two games in hand over the third-placed Republic of Ireland.

Defenders: Gonzalo Castro, Manuel Friedrich, Clemens Fritz, Per Mertesacker, Philipp Lahm, Christoph Metzelder, Marcell Jansen.

Forwards: Mario Gomez, Patrick Helmes, Miroslav Klose, Kevin Kuranyi.
