Fernando Torres to miss Spain's Euro 2008 qualifiers

Striker Fernando Torres will miss Spain's Euro 2008 qualifiers against Latvia on Saturday and Liechtenstein next week after straining his ankle during training. The 23-year-old sustained the injury after a challenge from Real Madrid defender Sergio Ramos. Espanyol striker Luis Garcia is expected to replace Torres in the Spain squad. Spain are third in Group F with nine points from five games, three points behind Sweden and four adrift of leaders Northern Ireland who have played a game more.

Filippo Inzaghi returns to Italy's squad for Euro 2008 qualifiers

Filippo Inzaghi, the AC Milan striker was included in Italy’s 23 man squad for the 2008 European Championship qualifiers against the Faroe Islands and Lithuania by coach Roberto Donadoni. "Pippo" has played one match at the World Cup last year scoring a goal in the first round against Czech Republic. Later Italy went on to win the tournament. The qualifying matches with Faroe Islands will be on Saturday in Torshavn and with Lithuania in Kaunas on June 6.

THE BIG MATCH: The second round of qualifying matches for the Euro 2008 will begin on June 2nd. Among the matches played on the day, one to be watched is the France X Ukraine match. Zdenek Grygera left out of Czech Republic squad for Euro qualifier

Zdenek Grygera, the 27-year-old defender will be left out of the Czech Republic squad to play the Euro 2008 qualifier against Wales next month due to left knee injury. Coach Karel Bruckner, has replaced Tomas Zapotocny from Udinese for Grygera in the 19-man squad. Captain Tomas Rosicky, goalkeeper Petr Cech, striker Lubos Pecka were also included the team. The first match for Czech Republic in the second round qualifiers will be the June 2 match with Cyprus in Cardiff .

Zlatan Ibrahimovic back in Sweden's squad for Euro 2008 qualifier

Zlatan Ibrahimovic, one of Sweden's key players has been included in the 21-man squad for next month's European Championship qualifiers by the Sweden coach Lars Lagerback. He underwent surgery less than a month ago but team physiotherapist Johan Sandberg hopes Ibrahimovic is likely to recover in time for the games against Denmark on June 2 and Iceland on June 6. Sweden, second in Group F, is bidding to qualify for its fifth straight major championship and is one point behind Northern Ireland which has played one more game than Sweden.

Ballack out of Germany's Squad for Euro 2008 qualifier

Michael Ballack, Germany’s captain will miss next week's Euro 2008 qualifiers on June 2nd and June 6th after failing to recover from an ankle injury. Ballack, who has won 77 caps for his country, was injured playing for Chelsea in a Premier League game against Newcastle United on April 22. He had undergone an operation last month, but it did not go down well and after several weeks of treatment Ballack told national coach Joachim Loew that he was withdrawing from the squad. Germany are top of Group D with a game in hand over the second-placed Czech Republic and two games in hand over the third-placed Republic of Ireland.

Woodgate to miss England's Euro 2008 qualifiers

Jonathan Woodgate, the Middlebrough central defender will miss England’s Euro 2008 qualifier, to be held next month in Estonia, due to knee surgery. Pressure has been building on coach Steve McClaren since a disappointing run of results left England fourth in the group. Woodgate will play Boro's final game of the season against Fulham. England have a friendly match against Brazil on June 1, as a warm-up for the Estonia game. The second round of qualifying matches will begin from June 2 and end by November 21.

Nuno Gomes out of EURO 2008 qualifier - a blow for Portugal

Nuno Gomes, SL Benfica forward is out for the rest of the season after deciding to undergo surgery on a troublesome groin injury, ruling him out of Portugal's UEFA Euro 2008 qualifier against Belgium next month. The former Fiorentina ACF striker has been plagued by a persistent problem this term and, despite featuring in 24 Portuguese League games as well as 14 European club matches for Benfica, has decided to undergo surgery. The news comes as a blow to Benfica, for whom captain Simão Sabrosa also underwent surgery recently, but also Portugal, who will now have to face Belgium on 2 June without the experienced 30-year-old, who has scored three goals in their Group A campaign so far. Poland leads Group A with 16 points from seven matches ahead of Portugal, Serbia and Finland having 11 points from six games.

Greece - would they be able to make it to the final again?

Bayern midfield Schweinsteiger, misses Germany's Euro 2008 qualifiers


Bastian Schweinsteiger, 22-year-old Bayern Munich midfield maestro told German magazine Sports-Bild last week that he is still weeks away from playing again after picking up a knee infection from a tick bite. German coach Joachim Loew hoped their attacking midfielder, 43-time capped Schweinsteiger, one of Germany's top performers at last year's World Cup, will be fit for June's Euro 2008 games against San Marino and Solvakia.

Because of the persistent knee injury, Schweinsteiger will miss his country's Euro 2008 qualifiers . Germany are top of Group D, level on points with the Czech Republic and the Republic of Ireland. The second round of qualifying matches will begin from June 2 and end by November 21.

European Football Championship - EURO 2008

EURO 2008 Qualifying Matches

The European Football Championship is the main football competition of the men's national football teams governed by UEFA, the administrative and controlling body for European football. UEFA (Union of European Football Associations) being one of the biggest of six continental confederations of FIFA was founded on June 15, 1954 in Basel, Switzerland. The championship, originally called the European Nations Cup, is held every four years since 1960. In 1968, the name of the championship was changed to European Football Championship and is considered as the second-most important competition after the FIFA World Cup.

Euro 2008 championships are co-hosted by Austria and Switzerland and will be held at Austria and Switzerland, from 7 June to 29 June 2008. A total of 16 teams will participate in the tournament. The nations hosting the championship is automatically qualified for the event.The remaining 14 teams will be determined through qualifying matches which started in August 2006 and ending by November 2007.
