Francesco Totti retires from International Football

Italian striker Francesco Totti announced his retirement from international football last Friday. Totti, who made 58 appearances for Italy scoring nine goals, had not played for the national team since they won the World Cup last July. Totti, one of the most gifted players in the world, has never fully achieved his potential at international level despite his World Cup winners' medal and a runners-up medal from Euro 2000. Totti, widely recognised as the symbol of Roma, has been the number one goalscorer and the most capped player in the club's history. Totti was declared the winner of the prestigious European Golden Boot, the award given to the top scorer in all the European leagues on 7th June 2007. Italy is now in the second place in Group B, two points behind leaders France. The next match for Italy is with France on September 8th.
