Croatia Vs Russia ends in goalless draw

The 2008 Euro Cup qualifier played last Wednesday between Croatia and Russia, ended in a goalless draw, just like last September qualifiers in Moscow. The relatively young national team from Croatia, which registered with FIFA in July 1992 and has not lost a single home tie for almost 13 years, dominated the first half as Russia was forced to soak up the pressure. But the Russian team, with experienced Dutch Coach Guus Hiddink at the helm, remained resolute throughout the first period rebuffing dangerous Croatian attacks. Russia played more of an aggressive game in the second half coming close to finding Croatia's net through Alexander Kerzhakov, Alexei Berezutsky and Sergei Ignashevich, but were unable to find a way through.

Wednesday's goalless draw has brought Russia and Croatia a point each, but the Croatians are still in pole position in Group E with 17 points, while the Russians hold third place with 15 points, with both teams having played seven qualifying games. Israel, who came out victorious 2-0 on Wednesday in an away game with Andorra, is in second place on goal difference with 17 points like group leaders Croatia, but Israel has already played eight games. England is only one point behind Russia in fourth place after seven games. Russia will play their next qualifier at home on September 8 against the team from
Macedonia, which is currently ranked fifth in Group E with seven points after seven matches.
